A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum

5.0

I am honestly kind of speechless after reading this book. It was brilliant. It was full of culture and love and determination and self discovery. I couldn't put it down and I wasn't ready for it to end. Etaf Rum's narrative style is compelling; it demands attention, and deserves it. From the first line ("I was born without a voice, one cold overcast day in Brooklyn, New York. No one ever spoke of my condition. I did not know I was mute until years later, when I opened my mouth to ask for what I wanted and realized no one could hear me.") to the very last, I felt everything. I got angry when they got angry, and I mourned when they mourned. Rum's characters are well developed and human and exist in a realistic and immersive world.

Please, please, PLEASE read this book. You won't regret it.
