Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin
3.0

Joe lives in a flat in Peckham with his mom and her boyfriend Dean. The mom and Dean decide to take a vacation to Spain and leave thirteen-year-old Joe home alone. At first Joe really likes being home by himself. He can watch telly and play xbox as long as he wants. He also meets Asha who's grandpa lives across the hall. Then mom and Dean don't come home when they are supposed to. As one week stretches into two, Joe runs out of money, food and electricity. He has to go back to school hungry and dirty. To make matters worse, a bully is threatening him and demanding money. No one can know that he is home alone though. Asha guesses and is determined to help him.

Joe All Alone is an interesting book. I like the character of Joe who seems like a normal kid just trying to get by. The book was very British however, full of slang that I am not sure American readers will understand. Not all books translate to other cultures and I fear this might be one of those. While I am sure a lot of readers can sympathize with Joe and what he has to go through, I am not sure they will stick with the book.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.
