“One should never underestimate the staying power of a woman who had literally nowhere else to be.”
For the last few months I have been reading a lot of heavy, depressing books filled with hardships, sorrow and misery. In the mood for an inspirational summer read, I reached for this one. It is of course predictable but quite charming regardless, narrated by a varied cast of characters that are vivid and loveable. It was an excellent selection for what I was seeking.
“Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is.”
Recommended to readers that find themselves in the quotes they highlight, romantics that don’t like reading romance novels, and to those that enjoy the challenge of cracking open the hard exterior shell of a curmudgeon to find the soft gooey center they hide inside.
“She was in every book I’d ever read, every tale that had ever touched my heart. Fiction and nonfiction, memoir and short story - no matter what I read, I always found her.”
-----
First Sentence: The day I met Arthur McLachlan was perfectly ordinary.
Favorite Quote: In many ways, every death was separated by a lifetime. There was before and there was after, and the only thing that linked them was a wisp of a memory that seemed to be fading with every passing day.
