The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory
3.0

This was definitely not the best I've read of Philippa Gregory, but it wasn't a bad read all-in-all. My biggest issue with this was the extreme shortness of the chapters, each told from the perspective of one of the three main characters (Mary Queen of Scots, the Earl of Shrewsberry, or his wife Bess). Each chapter was around three or four pages long, which didn't give me as a reader much time to really get a good feeling for any of the character's emotions before I was on to the next chapter. I liked that this was told from the three points-of-view, but it just felt so hurried that at times I felt pretty distant from the actual action.

There was also a level of repetition in the way the story was told. Since each character would be reflecting on events, it seemed like every three pages the same thing would be announced, just from a different point-of-view.

Still, I really enjoyed the different perspectives on this--Bess, especially, appealed to me as a narrator--and overall this was a good read, just not anything great.
