Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

5.0

Honestly, as much as I loved Dark Places and Gone Girl, this is the best of Gillian Flynn's work. To me, it's a classic. The themes of violence, trauma, and motherhood, sisterhood, and womanhood all blend so spectacularly well. Camille is a great protagonist. She's flawed and pitiable, but the reader is also made to respect her, even in her poor decision making (she's perhaps the most likable out of Gillian Flynn's main characters). The atmosphere is so strong and the prose hits you hard. I honestly and truly think "A child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort" is one of the best lines in modern literature, especially in the thriller genre. As I get older and think more critically about the books I read, I don't often give out five star ratings, but if any book deserves it its Sharp Objects.
