I was really interested in the premise of this book. Different authors telling reimagining a of British folktales. What I wasn’t expecting was that each one was essentially a piece of literary fiction, some having a lot to do with the story they’re retelling and some seemingly nothing.

I know I have the unpopular opinion of not liking a lot of literary fiction. I just get bored very easily and often dont want to read a paragraph about how a couch reminds someone of a traumatic event that has nothing to do with the plot. For that reason I didn’t much care for this collection of stories.

Some of them were really great and captivated me the whole time though! I just assumed wrongly that these would be quicker, to-the-point, folktales and not long winded stories with some magical realism sprinkled in. You know what I mean? πŸ˜ͺ The last chapter is like this and I enjoyed it way more.

Overall, still 3ish stars since it all really is beautifully written and some better than others.
