I think this might be the first autobiography I’ve read, and it’s hard to review. After all, this is someone else’s story, I can’t really judge character development, plot, or the things I’d usually look for in a book.

Like many, I grew up watching iCarly and Sam was one of my favorites. Watching the interviews and videos when the book first came out, of her talking about her experiences was surprising. I knew about Dan Schneider at this point, but hearing about it it’s different, and then you also add all the abuse from her mom, and her eating disorders. It wasn’t until this year that I found the book and decided to read it and it definitely hits hard, reading about all the things she went through.

The writing style was interesting. Everything was written from the POV of the age she was at that point. So the beginning is narrated by a little girl, and she grows as the book progresses. I did find it weird how the blurb and promotion call it a “hilarious memoir.” Sure, there’s some dark humor here and there, but I wouldn’t call it hilarious. It touches heavy subjects about mental health, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, parental and sexual abuse.

I would recommend reading the book if you’re in the right mental space, it’s an incredible story, with a hopeful ending. But definitely check what the book it’s about.
