*Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
*Also note this review will contain some explicit language which I normally don't use. I have had a few days to let the story settle, I needed a few days to be able to use my words, but there are no other words for some of the things I have to say. If that bothers you then stop reading now. Really if swearing bothers you then you shouldn't read this book.*
I am a recent T.M. Frazier fan. I just read King and Tyrant not too long ago and loved them both. I just saw so many people recommending them that I had to give them a try (and boy am I glad I did!). If you have read those books then you know Bear already. Man...the author really doesn't hold anything back and one of the things I love about these stories. This is not warm, snuggly, everything is fine all the time read. This is an intense, if I were the girl in the story I would not survive type read. This is not some fairy tale, not a story where people get saved just in the nick of time so nothing truly terrible happens. No this is shit happens and they hopefully are saved/manage to escape before too much damage is done. Then they have to try and deal with whatever happened. Fuck it is intense.
I knew this going in, I knew Lawless would be rough, but holy shit! I knew it, yet it still just blew my mind. I was reading and getting closer to the end and realizing that this wasn't going to all wrap up in this one story, I was going to have to wait for another book, and was trying to keep it together. I got to the end and was like okay...Everything will be okay. You're good Jen. I can wait to see how this situation is resolved. Then there is a sneak peak at Soulless, the next book and continuation of this story, and was just like fuuuuuuck!! That is really the only word for it. I was barely holding it together, but that snippet just tore me apart (in a good way mind you. It is all in a good way). It was just like yeah, Soulless is going to be even more intense, but that is what I love about this author. Most would shy away from really terrible things, but not her. So amazing!
So Lawless. Bear and Thia. Their first meeting is kind of cute, but not in a romantic way. Thia lives in a small town, but things are not the best growing up. Her mom is not all there, but her dad tries his best to keep everything together. She has had so much responsibility for so long and when things take a turn for the much worse she doesn't really know what to do. She doesn't really have friends or anyone to count on since she was always busy trying to keep a roof over her families head. She runs to Bear at the MC club since he made a promise to her when they first met, only he is not there anymore.
Bear has been hold up wasting away his life. He has been staying numb and likes it that way. He is directionless now that he doesn't have the MC. It is kind of sad. I really liked him in King's story and I know he is going through a lot, but I just love him so I want him to be happy. When King calls him to let him know Thia is there and in a bad way he goes to check it out, but he is not expecting to stay. He wants to be in and out and back to his oblivion. After all he has a hit out on him. He is a dead man walking and he doesn't need to bring that to anyones doorstep.
Thia and Bear are just great together. They have so much going on, Bear's old MC is after both of them, and it just seems like they won't ever be able to just be. Thia doesn't really understand the trouble she is in, what would happen to her if she gets locked up or is alone in the world. Bear keeps trying to protect her and keep her safe, but she is not very good at trusting other people. I kept thinking Bear has enough on his plate, I know you are trying to help, but this isn't the way to do it!! She sees herself as being weak if she just hides out, and she doesn't want to be weak. She doesn't realize how incredibly strong she is to be able to deal with everything that happens the way that she does. Plus Bear who wouldn't want Bear?
This story was intense, but a great read. I love that the female characters in these stories don't want the men to change. At all. They know and accept who and what the guys are. They are who they are and they love them. It was cute seeing glimpses of King and Ray and family. You also still get bits of Preppy in this story which make me so happy! He is probably my favorite character of the series. I mean how can you not love him? I miss Preppy, but am glad we get to still experience a bit of his charm. It is a dark world these guys live in, but they manage to find the light, they manage to find a bit of goodness for themselves. Now the countdown to Soulless begins. I can't wait to see what happens next and how Bear and Thia figure everything out. It is going to be a rough ride, but I am ready for it. Until then.
