This was immensely fun! A smart take on an old subject - vampires -- with great thought given to transmission and the motivation one might have to seek vampirism (as well as plenty of grotesque reasons to avoid it). Black doesn't shy away from gore, but it never seems gratuitous. The capitalist ventures that spring up around vampirism in this world seem apt and funny, but happily, they aren't the focus of the book. The heroine is strong, capable, and not always right.
