Buja's Diary by Se-Yong O

challenging dark sad tense medium-paced

2.5

A very interesting read. Sometimes I’d find a story funny and lighthearted, and the next sorrowful and bittersweet. I do think this is a nice collection despite that, and the variety does it well. I do believe I would have rated this higher if I felt more connection to the character’s journeys. At times the nudity and adult themes had me taken aback, but that’s only because this was listed in the teen section of my local library. I would not have read it if I had to buy it, since I do not think I would have felt drawn to it in , say, a Barnes & Noble.

While many books are problematic because of their time, I do think this aged a bit better. Some do make you cringe, whether that be outdated medical terms—i.e the r slur being used—or odd descriptions, I do not think that impacted my feel on the story all too much.

Overall I enjoyed Buja’s Diary in some parts and think it’s worth the read!
