Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton

3.0

I enjoyed reading this book. There were a few moment that made me feel a bit umcomfy, like the gun scene. For this genre, this would have been a great scene, had it not been for the fact that this was not consensual. This could have been written differently or even later in the story where the fmc was consenting.

The mmc is kind of plain and I did not feel a deeper connection with him. His reasons for his acts seem odd and we barely know anything about him. I think the author wanted him to be mysterious but it did not come off that way. You don’t even know his last name until the second book, which shows how little we, the audience, know about him. The self awareness he has is great but I missed how he doesn’t learn and grow from this awareness. Not really much character development.

Fmc is just stupid and dumb at times. The contrast with her best friend who sees the danger from a mile away is just painful. She deliberately puts herself in situations where bad things happen to her. Then you get an inner dialogue about how stupid she thinks she is. At first I could read it and disgard it, but after a while it just became annoying. Again, there is self awareness but it is ignored and gets repeated.

If you are into dark, kinky romance, it is a good read. Only if you can look past the stated above observations.
