Annie John
by Jamaica Kincaid
I really kind of hated Annie. She is so spoiled, and it made it hard for me to care about her or her story. I know everyone goes through difficult phases as a kid, but there wasn't anything relatable about Annie’s childhood or her relationship with her mom. In fact, I just felt bad for her poor mother.
Normally, I love books about coming-of-age and complicated family dynamics, but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me. I really wanted to like it, but I found myself rolling my eyes and rushing through it, hoping something would change, but it didn’t.
