"Well, my dear, just as we don't know how long a match will last until we light it, we never know how long a life will last until we live it. And often there are factors that we have no control over."
It’s been a while since I’ve felt this way about a book. This book was beautifully written with a flawed main character who felt like listening to a friend tell you their story. No matter how much you want to give your advice to them, you know and trust that they’ll learn on their own time. The term “death doula” was what drew me to the book (being a new nurse and having taken a “Death and Dying” class in university). A well done reflection on how we approach death (be it our family and friends or how we cope with our own inevitable end) and life alike. Clover is a character that, no matter how much she annoyed me at times, I found myself rooting for (partly because we share the same stubbornness). She is a character that holds a mirror up to the reader, leaving you reflective of the choice we make every day: to exist out of habit or to live wholeheartedly.
