Sleep, Pale Sister by Joanne Harris
3.0

The only reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 4 is that I didn't think the writing itself was all that spectacular. For the most part it was a lot better than Dan Brown's writing in terms of being writerly, but it still wasn't stunning.

The story itself was pretty cool, though - I can imagine this making an amazing gothic film and being extremely haunting. It was not a book that had a happy ending, but I guess for a lot of the book you knew it wasn't going to.

It was a book about revenge, sin, a dash of depravity here and there. It was a book about ghosts. It was a bit of a gothic tragedy. In spite of what a bastard he was, I liked the character of Mose how he never repented, and was pretty much laughing all the way to the gallows. Henry Chester made me oh so angry, but at the same time I kind of liked what a dick he was. I felt sorry for Effie who was probably the main innocent in the whole thing. I guess we can't blame Marta, who was beyond the clutches of human decency and morality in every way.

I liked some of the descriptive language used - cats and ladies made of leaves, dead leaves or snowflakes fluttering down into various abysses. Etc.

So yeah, I would recommend this book for an entertaining read, but I wouldn't say it is the best thing you'll ever read.
