James by Percival Everett

2.0

So conflicted on this one. Having just reread Huck Finn, I was thrilled to come across James. It started out very good seeing the world through the enslaved. It was interesting to see what Jim did while Huck wasn't around. Showing the true horror of slavery. But the reality and retelling never came together. Jim turns out to be an ultra educated man reading some of the most high brow authors of the time. But how and why? Huck was never developed which would be alright since it was Jim's story, but when Huck was around, he seemed to be in there because he was in the original book. The reveal of his parentage felt hurried and tossed in for a "twist" to shock readers. It did not, it just made the whole experience disappointing.
