I was reading other reviews and I was surprised the find mixed-to-low ratings. I guess compared to the other stories in this series, the tone of this one is definitely different. I remember loving this book the first time I read it a couple years ago. I wanted to re-read it to see if my opinion might of changed. It didn't.
I've definitely read a lot more romance since my first read, and I find myself drawn to survivor stories. Stories where the characters are broken and struggling, but still manage to find their HEA. This book still hits me in the gut. Maybe I connect with it more than I'd willing to admit to the entire internet, but something about the tenderness of Jackson and the determination of Kelsey to reclaim her life just stands out to me. Don't get me wrong, there are moments when Kelsey is a hard to love character, but I like that she always realizes that running away and alcohol aren't actually helping her. She keeps feeling awful until she learns to accept and reclaim her life.
Jackson doesn't force Kelsey to change. He allows her figure it out at her own pace. As I'm writing this, it kind of reminds me of Rhysand from ACOTAR (specifically ACOMAF). Or Garrett from The Deal (Elle Kennedy, Off-Campus Series) The stalker plot doesn't bother me, but I could see how it could be a trigger for others.
Overall, this book still ranks very highly on my list of personal favorites.
