racham1123 's review for:
The Ex Hex
by Erin Sterling
funny
lighthearted
medium-paced
It's been a long time since I finished a book during one stand alone car ride, but here we are.
I really liked this initially. It was really fast paced right out of the gates and I was invested. The characters were fun and I enjoyed the language and dialogue. But, somewhere along the lines the plot shifted a bit. It was still enjoyable, but once Rhys and Vivi started sleeping together we got a lot of that and not so much of the 'continued fast paced story'.
Like, with Pipers ghost (for a moment can we think about the oddity of a supernatural book about witches where the idea of ghosts existing it weird for them??)-- Rhys was the only person she tried to attack. Besides that she was just screaming and frustrated that she couldn't pick up a book in the library. And Vivi who approaches things differently, more of a puzzler, a seeker of why's-- well she didn't really invest as much interest in this VERY IMPORTANT MOMENT. Pipers' ghost was literally the key to unraveling everything but Vivi and Rhys were too busy fucking each other to actually invest in saving the town.
Yes, they do eventually get their shit together after Simons surprise visit where he literally called them out on everything I was mentally screaming at them. And, yeah, it comes together at last in the end.
When they realize it's a blood curse though and Elaine goes 'Oh I didn't even think of that!' Are you fucking kidding me? You're telling me you're going to stress through the whole book how little we all know about cursing but also forget this one crucial fact that you did in fact already know? C'mon.
I also found it a bit frustrating that neither of our MCs were telling each other that they loved the other one. All in all if we cold have just peppered in the sex and actually smoothly continued the fast paced story the whole way through I probably would have rated it higher. But here we are.
