The Brothers K by David James Duncan
5.0
It's been far too long since I've checked the fifth star on a fiction book. Nearly five years, in fact. And, to think I almost gave up on this one. That was a close call.
It took me much longer than I usually tolerate to connect with this book. I'm really surprised this book made the cut in this "Life is too short to read boring books" stage of my life. Simply put, I find sports mind numbingly boring...and baseball was the dominant topic of pretty much the first quarter (possibly third) of this novel. It was the writing that kept me going. David James Duncan is - hands down - one of the best authors I've been privileged to read. His character development and writing style are off the chain. Once I bonded with the characters and story at the one-quarter mark, my reading time (just before falling asleep every night) became a time I began to look forward to...a time to reunite with my adopted family.
Read this book. If necessary, power through the baseball. I can't imagine that you'll be sorry.
