The Guy in the Middle by Kate Stewart
2.0

I loved the first two books in this series, but this one didn't do it for me. It's so upsetting that it was the finale.

Big things:

1) Writing Rene phonetically was completely unnecessary. I don't know if he was supposed to be a flamboyant Hispanic man or just a slightly more colorful guy from Louisiana, and I feel like that ambiguity says more than I could ever try to state explicitly.

2) The epilogue killed whatever warm and fuzzy feelings I had. Theo/Laney and Troy/Clarissa had already had their moments. Hundreds of pages of them. Having them be there for Lance and Harper would have been enough, and the final scene certainly should NOT have been about Theo and Laney. This is not the place for a full circle moment. Also, the epilogue literally explained to the reader what it meant for those men to grow up from barely acquainted roommates to lifelong friends. No s***. Would have hit harder without the explanation.

3) There was too much drama here. I have no problem with the events themselves, but I do have a problem with the fact that they were so drawn out. There's a fine line between angst and torture, and Stewart obliterated that line with abandon.
