Ahalya by Koral Dasgupta

4.0

Ahalya is well known from the saga of Ramayana and also she is one of the Pancha Kanyas in Hindu mythology. She was cursed by her husband Rishi Gautam to be turned to stone until Lord Ram himself sets foot on her. Well, to be honest, I was not well known to her character before.

The book starts with Ahalya as a spirit, waiting for her father, Brahma to create a beautiful and perfect soul. We come across her childhood, and her curious and calm nature. She is not allowed to cry, she is not allowed to feel happy, and she is expected to be the perfect wife.

Moving forward with the story, we come across her journey from being a child to a grown-up woman. There are a few facts about parenthood which make to think a lot about the position and responsibility of being a woman.

Everything in this book is based on facts, nothing is biased. I am glad I came across this series. Looking forward to reading the next books.

I recommend this book to mythology and feminist literature lovers.
