Taking Chances
by Molly McAdams
Wow. You know a book is going to stick with you long after the final words when you stay up till 230 am reading even though you know you have work at 7 am (yeah, I'm a zombie right now. I regret nothing).
To say this book was a roller coaster would be a serious understatement and probably a slap in the face to Ms. Molly McAdams. So many emotions, so much heartbreak, and so much happiness. McAdams has a way to pack every emotion known to man into her books and knows how to sucker punch you in the gut. I bawled my eyes out halfway through this book. I've cried before because of books but guys I was sobbing. My boyfriend was trying to fall asleep and asked me if I was crying and thought that he had done something to upset me! I'm not lying!
This story is a devastatingly beautiful love triangle. I'm not usually a fan of love triangles especially ones that may have the possibility of cheating involved. But I was pleasantly surprised. Throughout the whole book I was on one side of the issue and without even realizing it McAdams had me wanting something entirely different. I couldn't believe my shock halfway through the book and thought that I had clearly misunderstood and read something wrong. And my heart broke. As I preceded to sob for the next chapters. And continued to start crying at other moments of the book---that to me is the definition of a good author. Or maybe I'm too emotionally invested in books and characters (meanwhile, thank goodness I am not Harper).
The main character, Harper, is a strong independent character who definitely has her faults and some serious shortcomings. At some points I just wanted to shake her but then realized some of her thought process was probably the exact way I would be thinking. Such a strong character for everything that happens to her, whether it was her fault or not.
The only critique (and not even sure if it can be considered that) would be in McAdams' books the conflicts that occur can border on the line of being a little much. So many big and little conflicts throughout. Between the love triangle, Harper's dilemma, the plot twist, Carter, Brandon's fights, Sir, and more it can feel like way to much for one story. BUT at the same time that is what makes McAdams' style so distinct. I've read her other works Forgiving Lies, Deceiving Lies, and From Ashes. They are all heavy on the conflict but also make you feel so much emotion. I guess this critique is rooted in being too emotionally invested with the characters and really empathizing with them.
I'm excited and incredibly nervous to read Stealing Harper. NOTE: If you want to read this series READ TAKING CHANCES FIRST. If you read Stealing Haprer first then Taking Chances will be completely spoiled. I'm not sure if I am emotionally ready at this moment to read Stealing Harper. I might have to put this one off for a little while until I am emotionally ready. Cause I'm sure this one will cause the sobbing to continue.
I highly recommend this author and her other books she has written. She is incredibility talented and definitely has a way with storytelling.
