Adam Bede by George Eliot
5.0

When I read that Woolf hailed Eliot as the only serious, adult novelist of England, I agreed but I really thought such a praise was confined to her later works. Man, how wrong I was: Adam Bede ranks pretty darn high on my list of “novels I wish I wrote.”

Only Eliot can get away with layering (great) stories with social and moral commentaries. Dauntless!
