Really sweet start to this cosy romantic fantasy series, one that is taking place in a very interesting and well thought out magical world.
I love Fin as a main character, especially how his particular brand of magic functions, and I appreciated the diverse and, at times, eclectic plot lines weaving through the work. The rest of the characters are a fascinating mix of people, all brought vividly to life. The main romantic plot line was left in a satisfying place whilst leaving many plot arcs open for the further books in the series and whilst the humour was a little hit and miss for me (down to personal preference for certain types of humour rather than any inclusion of punching down/unpleasant/shock value jokes) the mix between the serious issues facing the kingdom, the romance, and the elements of light relief worked well.
I did find some of the exposition, and some of issues raised, rather heavy handed but that eased as the book found its feel and didn't negatively impact my enjoyment of the work as a whole. It certainly didn’t put me off reading more, in fact I already have a copy of the second book in the series because I really need to know what happens to Fin next.
