I watched the movie when it first came out and when I learned there was a book I bought it almost immediately. However, I put off reading it for a very long time. There's not a particular reason I just never got around to it. I had picked it up a few times but would get distracted or pick something else up.
I love this plot. I love Lou. I love Will. I hate their families.
However, I found this book extremely difficult to get through. I can't pinpoint an exact reason. I think the style of writing was just a little drawn out when it didn't need to be. I loved the perspectives and change of point of view. I just for whatever reason did not love the book. I liked it a lot but I just didn't love it.
I think the message is beautiful and the ending is poignant. I like that it wasn't happily ever after but I understand that it could be problematic for promoting education about disabilities. Everyone is different though and if you keep in mind this is a fictional story about one person's life I think it's okay.
I was surprised to find the movie and the book was pretty similar. I think the book provided more insight on why Lou is the way she is but other than that I felt the characters portrayed were spot-on for the film.
