This was ok.

I think it was better than some of the reviews that it got when I first saw it on Amazon Prime to read for free. Again, I was in the position of if I don't like it, I can just stop. The main plot was a good read but if I'm honest, I finished the book because I think Banet created a great world with the Jacky Leon series.

The premise of the book, the characters, all of it was very interesting. I like that she expanded the world and let readers see more species and get more lore and background. I love seeing a shifter I had never seen before in a book and a woman of color at that. I don't like that her "go-to" personality is a mean asshole or at the bare minimum someone who just seems angry and mad at the world but she isn't. There's enough of that stereotype in the world that it isn't needed. I wouldn't mind reading more about Kaliya and her life and background. She's a strong, independent Naga who is living life the way she wants. She doesn't let people take advantage of her and, if you were hunted your whole life and your species was on the verge of extinction, you may feel the same way. If you have Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime, I recommend reading because it's included and Banet creates a great supernatural world.

In short, I think the focus and emphasis on Kaliya's personality harmed this book. The consideration of how all her past experiences and what happened to her and her species on her personality took a back seat until the end.

Loved that Banet didn't have Kaliya immediately swoon, change her life plans, and enact the *last resort* plan at the council. It gives her and Raphael a chance to actually get to know each other. More importantly, women are more than baby makers and have a right to live how they want.

Naga/Nagini immediately made me think of Harry Potter, so I knew snake.

I had no emotions when Charlie died. I should've cared, but all I could muster was a "oh that's sad" and I feel like Banet could''ve and should've made me care more.

BIG props to Banet for including Big Pharma secrets and behind-the-back deals that happen with the government sometimes as a plot point. Glad the right side prevailed but I am glad it showed that there was a Fae biased.
