Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi, Jason Reynolds

informative fast-paced

5.0

I highly recommend the audio for this book. Jason Reynolds reads it - the way he wrote it, and it is so good to listen to. My 15 year old son was in the car with me for a short road trip and we listened to it, and he enjoyed it also. He loves history and was excited when he knew the names and people Reynolds mentioned. I was looking for a book that I could finish in a few hours and was surprised I listened to the whole thing in less than 3 hours; so it’s a quick read.

I haven’t read the original book (almost 600 pages) by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, but he gives the introduction to the book. He talks about his intentions for the book: that he was curious when racism started, so he did research tracing it back. It was published in 2016. Reynolds then re-wrote it for young people, which is this copy, released in 2020; then Reynolds worked with Sonja Cherry-Paul to release a version for younger students last year, 2021.

This book begins back in European history, back to thoughts of Aristotle, and how the Puritans brought that to the USA, in the creation of colleges, like Harvard. He discussed American leaders, including Puritan minister Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and legendary activist Angela Davis… I didn’t know much about David, but her story weaves through many others. It ends through President Obama and touches briefly (maybe a few sentences) about Black Lives Matter.
