The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman
5.0

I did not expect this book to be a 5 star, but I'm so glad it was.

Two enemies, Valentina and Oksana, are brought together amid the Chernobyl disaster when they have to evacuate the city because of the spreading radiation.

Their newfound friendship was so sweet to see. As Oksana realized she could be loved for who she is, she discovered that it is ok to be herself. I liked the contrast between Valentina's love for engineering and Oksana's love of art.

The situation that Oksana was in with her abusive parents made me want to come into the book and tell them off with varying choice words. During one scene, Oksana's mother hit her with a belt upon her boyfriend's request, and I was seething the whole time.

The most interesting tie in was Valentina's grandmother's story included in scenes between the main plot, under the guise of a character named Rifka. I couldn't see the two connecting at first, but once I saw it all the dots came together.

I need more from this author! This book was impactful, insightful, and moving in its messages that friendship survives all challenges and life is worth living, no matter what.
