The Ravens by Danielle Paige, Kass Morgan
4.0
They say sororities are like cults, but this one is a coven.
The Ravens follows a sorority of witches named as such through what they think is a typical year. Rush season starts and thus a new group of fledgling witches are inducted into the coven. But with the start of the new year comes a person from Scarlett's past that she tries to forget. A dark secret brings the return of dark magic and murder.
I really enjoyed this book, which is in a similar vein to Ninth House although much more watered down. I thought the magic system was unique in following the suits of tarot cards, although it was odd. Calling witches cups, swords, pentacles, and wands is a little quirky.
The story alternates between Scarlett and Vivi, one of the rush picks, as they navigate the rush season and the return of what's haunting Scarlett. They face a generous amount of tension between them as Scarlett sees Vivi as a threat to her and the sisterhood. It's like mean girls with witches at times.
There were parts in the story that I felt could have been fleshed out better, but the magic system was unique and the pacing was good if not fast. I would have enjoyed a greater detailed telling much more though. The romance aspects were fairly clichéd, but the plottwist was rather good. All in all, in think this was a good witch book that really did place emphasis on the value of friendship and sisterhood.
