Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
5.0
Naked Lunch is as powerful, memorable, and creative as any other book I’ve read. Amongst the grotesque and offensive moments are nuggets of prophetic wisdom. Besides being a defining novel of the beat generation it is the closest and most cohesive look at addiction I’ve ever come across. The prose is wonderful, and similar to the films of David Lynch or David Cronenberg, amongst the madness and the horror is pure genius.
The sober writings that are found in the appendix of the novel strengthen it and are a highlight. Rarely is an addict able to come back and write so clearly about their experiences, and what it means and feels like to be an addict. Wouldn’t you?
