I really didn't know anything about this story going into it. I remember adding it to my TBR years ago when I was thinking I'd read through the Times Top 100 Novels, but obviously I waited quite a while to give it a go. And that's kind of a shame, because I absolutely loved this. It is completely captivating; it covers so much ground and it has so much to offer. Labor and conditions for the working classes? Check. Segregation, racism, and discrimination? Check. Coming of age feels, loneliness, and loss? Check. And I feel like that barely skims the surface of everything this story shed light on. Did I get any of that from the title beforehand? No. But, after reading it I couldn't think of a more perfect title. It's sad and full of longing, but I still found myself so connected to the characters and wanting to know what became of them. I feel like I could go on and on about how much I loved this, or how meaningful this story is, but instead I'll just say pick it up and read it. You won't regret it. Also, it's insanity that McCullers wrote this at age 23... the depth of her writing comes of so poignant and mature.
