Thorn of the Night Blossoms by J.C. Kang

4.0

I enjoyed this short little novella. The world building is impressive considering the length of the book and I found most of the characters well-rounded and interesting. I liked that the main character Jie wasn't a Mary-Sue type who is flawless at everything she attempts and I liked the concept of skilled assassins hiding as courtesans to glean information. One of my very few criticisms was that Jie was always "sucking her lip"!
I found the story pretty solid and the mystery kept me guessing. The book ends with enought left open so I want to read on with the series, but not open enough that it felt frustrating. It's impressive that the author managed to write a book about young women being courtesans without making it feel seedy or it turning into erotica.
A really good little fantasy book.
