i woke up at 6AM to finish this book before i left for work - i’m usually not conscious until 6:45 at the earliest. toni morrison (rightfully) doesn’t shy away from the horrors of life under slavery - there are some incredibly gruesome events in this book, but there’s a build up to the details. the way she circles around those events, continually revisiting them and revealing bits and pieces of new information every time, propels this book forward and encapsulates how we deal with memory and trauma. can we ever truly escape our past, even if we think we’ve attained distance from it, both physically and through the passage of time?
she is so skilled at creating imagery and characters that just STICK with you. there is such a distinct sense of time and place, in addition to the well thought-out personalities and voices of each of the characters. i’m sure i missed out on certain threads and symbols as i devoured this book, but that just means it’s a great contender for a reread. toni morrison is writing her ass off in this book, but you didn’t need me to tell you that. the work speaks for itself!
