Reading others' reviews that expressed their frustration with the author's behavior was interesting because this is a memoir about someone who struggles with the very kinds of problematic behaviors readers became annoyed with. That in itself underscores common stigma/shaming associated with "mental illness". I put mental illness in quotations not because I don't believe it exists, but to demonstrate something the author mentioned a few times. She would describe a symptom of BPD & follow up with a musing that perhaps that particular symptom pointed to some primal human need. THAT idea reflects my understanding of mental illness-- as some form of communication of an unmet primal need. With that being said, I read this book with that general perspective.
I learned a lot from the author's explanations about DBT, CBT, IFS. I appreciate the exposure to IFS as I was not familiar with it before.
This memoir was good for observation of someone diagnosed with BPD. I felt proud for the author as she fought to learn all she could about her diagnosis and get well.
I learned a lot from and related to a lot of things from the book. It was worth the read.
