Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I grew up in San Diego county, California and remember studying the Aztecs in 6th grade. The Jazz Age setting is fresh and innovative; the story is the classic Hero's Journey, the ending is so incredibly perfect. I read it as slowly as I possibly could, I really want to see more of Casiopea Tun.
As a kid I devoured all the fairy tales; all the stories of Gods in every culture I could get my hands on. As a multiracial person, it made my heart sing reading about a girl who considered herself to be no one based on her looks. World building takes words and images and if you don't carefully absorb the information, you will miss the treasures this book unfolds. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
