Begin the World Over by Kung Li Sun

I bet you've never read a book where the main character invents gumbo. This is an alternate history about the Haitian Revolution spreading to the US mainland and as far as alternate history goes it's pretty good. One of the characters is a Haitian revolutionary who was historically a trans woman (probably) which is pretty cool. On the other hand Li Sun really tries to make the divides within Indigenous nations more clear cut than they were, in a way that I find kinda annoying. Basically, they're really hard on Indigenous leaders who wanted to negotiate and make the best of colonialism. Besides that, it's a pretty good book, if a bit meandering.
