Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke
3.0

A better reviewer than me would have a field day with this book. The amount of book cliches and reader pet peeves between these pages was absolutely unreal. Disappearing parent syndrome? Yes, they are off in Europe, have been for months, and don't even phone or send money. I judge them. Insta-love? Um, hell yeah. Although, I'm just going to state that likely the sheer stupidity of all the characters all the time, but particularly Vi falling for this guy immediately, can be explained by the paranormal elements. So. Stupidity of characters moves the plot? Yeah, but I guess I'll let that go. Main characters has no friends? What the hell is with this trend. I don't have tons of friends in real life (and they keep moving for work and school grumble, grumble), but I don't understand why so many characters seem to have zero, or maybe one friend. It just is odd. "Slutty" girls? Don't worry they get there's. Mean, violent, probably psychotic but oh so hot love interest? Yep! Lack of a clear setting? Yep...we are in New England somewhere... or maybe Maine like all those King novels. Total ignorance of all state and federal laws? Oy, don't get me started on the whole Jack situation.
So, this book was terrible, and it was not well written.
Spoiler Also, like so many cheap horror book before it a mysterious unknown sibling is the big evil. Seriously? Again?

That being said, it was immensely readable. I read it in a day of bumming around the house and, in between the eye rolls, it was enjoyable enough. A few chills here and there. I can't give this book two stars. I liked it, I read it, and I didn't consider not finishing it. So, three stars it is for a problematic, cliche ridden but entertaining novel.
