Beyond Limits by Laura Griffin

3.0

So, I liked the ninth book so I circled back to read this - argh!

I can't work out whether Laura Griffin writes so many of her heroes as arrogant, alpha males who disregard everyone else because she thinks they are sexy or because they actually represent her views on the way that the USA treats terrorists.

Derek Vaughan and his SEAL team rescue two hostages in Afghanistan but whilst there they find evidence indicating that a terrorist attack is being planned in Houston. They bring the evidence and a kidnapper back for investigation.

Basically, the top FBI taskforce is made to look totally incompetent in this book. No-one but Derek thinks to look at other surveillance cameras. The FBI find (or are given by Derek) lots of clues but do nothing with them/can't connect the dots. Derek and his trusty friend Cole between the two of them find all the clues and track down the suspects.

Derek pays no attention to any chain of command, certainly not that of the investigative taskforce. He stalks Liz who has ignored his calls and repeatedly tells him she doesn't want a relationship/sex with him. He doesn't tell her where he is taking her and he won't take no for an answer. Frankly I would have shot him. Oh, and apparently the Secret Service are also a bunch of incompetent idiots who sit around like country bumpkins while (a) Derek flits past their very noses, and (b)terrorists almost pull off an attack on their watch.

I really like Laura Griffin's plots but I do not like most of her heroes. Just once I would like one of the so-called heroines to call the hero's bluff and shoot him when he dares her to.
