The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. - The Complete Collection: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, The Voyage, Roscoe, A Royal Poet, A Sunday in London and many more by Geoffrey Crayon

4.0

I was pleasantly surprised on how much I enjoyed this collection of short stories as my first experience with Irving’s work. I’m not sure where the persona of Geoffrey Crayon ends and Washington Irving begins, but I felt a connection with the writings and felt like I could be friends with the author. I also enjoyed seeing a glimpse into the culture of the early 1800s and how humanity hasn’t changed much since then. I enjoy the musing/reflective tone and frankness of the author as well as his humor.

For future re reading I enjoyed:
The author’s account of himself
Roscoe
Rip Van Winkle
English writers in America (cultural significance)
The art of book making
A royal poet
The mutability of literature
Rural funerals
The spectre bridegroom
Little Britain
Traits of an Indian character (cultural)
Philip of Pokanoket (cultural)
John Bull (cultural)
The legend of Sleepy Hallow
