This markets itself as a mix between Merlin and Outlander. And while that's true, I feel like it definitely leans more into the historical fiction aspects than the romance. The romance is a very, very small part of the plot. However, on the historical side, it was amazingly done and extremely well researched. There were a lot of Celtic ritual and lore that was really interesting.
My biggest problem is that I really didn't like the main protagonist. As a child, she felt too adult, and then, as an adult, she felt very childish. She is supposed to be this great queen, but she makes horrible decisions that are very selfish. This is a trilogy, so perhaps she'll grow further in the series. There were so many amazing characters. I just wish we got other people's points of view throughout the book.
I will be continuing on with this series, but I won't be something I'm gonna pick up immediately.
