I liked this book, though I don't know if it's going to be particularly memorable for me. The language and prose was very beautiful and sensitively done, and it was definitely the highlight of the book to me. I also loved how normally and lovingly the subject of transness was treated. The trans mother of the main novella is described as a beautiful and strong person by the narrator main character, and yet the fact that she is trans is not really the focus of the novel, it's just another aspect of it. For a book written in the 1980s, I thought that was brilliant. And the themes explored, namely the different kinds of love, the way we respond to death and the way we build found families, were really sweet and handled with care and gentleness. I do think the book's short length is probably why I didn't feel super attached to the story and the reason it will not stick with me much, which I don't mean as a comment on the novella as a literary form, just a comment of this particular novella.
