The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams

3.0

I bought this book several years ago after enjoying his Shadowmarch series. However, the beginning of the book is very slow and boring. 200 pages that should've been less than 50.

We have several distant POVs, the main one being a kitchen boy named Simon. He was always ditching work and acting like he was ten, not fourteen, and I had a difficult time liking him. He was also conveniently always nearby to overhear any important conversations.

The world building of the kingdom, and the different thrones that made it up was just confusing, but it could be that I skimmed a little too much. Like I said it was SLOW.

Then we have some good exciting chapters, but then it gets even more boring. Simon is traveling alone, lost, sad, and possibly going crazy. (Which lasted for like 50 pages!) and I almost gave up.

Then, we met my favorite character, the Troll Binobuk. The traveling was much more entertaining and exciting after that. And after just reading the Wheel of Time, 200 pages of travel didn't seem that long. Haha

The intrigue once we got to Josua's castle wasn't my favorite. Simon was rather immature again, and drinking a lot. I was so frustrated that he couldn't remember seeing the King's deal in the woods for a sword!

During this part it's randomly mentioned that the king died two years ago. I was shocked! I had no idea it had been so long. I thought it had been more like two months. There wasn't a good sense of time passing.

Then, we're off on another journey…

Traveling through the ice and snow was sucky, but there was a lot of action. (And I liked the Sithi parts.)

I didn't like the parts back at the castle and the siege. I think I just didn't like his way of telling battle scenes, because there wasn't anything necessarily wrong with them.

The Princesses' story was only really getting started so I don't know how I feel about it yet. Unfortunately, it ends rather cliffhangery. Nothing is really resolved.

Do I plan on reading the next one? Yes. It definitely got better as it went.
