The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui

5.0

I can barely describe the emotions going through my mind right now, having just finished this beautiful memoir. Every refugee, and immigrant in fact, faces a different and deeply affecting uphill battle when they leave a country they once called home to resettle in a new land. Bui's illustrations and words strive to bring this struggle alive; not flinching from any hardships, nor excusing any resentment and disappointments along the way. The last few pages had me nearly in tears as I reflected on my own parents and our own path to North America - if only I could present our story as adeptly. This memoir is as much a story about history, politics and the consequences of war, as it is a family tale about expectations and relationships. A thoroughly emotional and thoughtful book that I would recommend to anyone.
