I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning about 1960s Atlanta with the rise of the Civil Rights movement. The famous Black folks weaved throughout this novel were phenomenal. Thankfully, I knew who most of the people were and their legacies, but I need to improve my education!
The storyline starts with a 17-year-old Black young woman, Doris, in need of an abortion. But the story is so much more than that. It is the intersectionality of class, race, gender, and LGBT+. Doris comes from a Black church background and learns that the different Black people are not heathens as she originally thought. It is a voyage of self-discovery and personal growth.
There are so many layers lto unpack with this historical novel. It is so well done. Read it!
