I am Becky Chambers-pilled so I am always going to rate her highly. I think this short is great but I feel like it relies heavily on knowledge from the novels. I know they can be read in any order but I think the similar story we had in the first book is important background for this short.
This is great though. You cry from sadness, laughing, and touching moments all in a short story. I love Becky Chambers writing. It’s so approachable and engaging to me. It’s exactly what I want to read and it’s hard to put down.
I think this story serves great as a coming of age story, quarter life crisis story, not feeling comfortable in society story, and I could honestly argue it might be a good trans allegory.
The one thing keeping it from a 5 is that I think it relies on context from the novels, and I think we got the same story in the novel so it almost feels like the same. I don’t mind reading that though :)
If I could request any short story in this series, I’d love to see one on a Sianat pair that accepts the virus. I do like the rejection story better. But I think that’s one area we lack in the “lore” besides from hearsay.
