Love at First Book by Jenn McKinlay
3.75

3.75 ⭐️ - this book was cute! I think it had a lot of potential that unfortunately just sort of fell flat a bit, but the concept was great and I still really enjoyed reading it.

Emily moves to Ireland to work at a bookstore and as an assistant to her favorite author, Siobhan, who’s writing the last book in Emily’s favorite series. What she didn’t realize, though, is that her boss at the bookstore is Siobhan’s grumpy son, Kieran. Emily and Kieran engage in a battle of wills over Siobhan’s writing, Kieran concerned that she’ll overwork herself and Emily set on helping conclude the series. That is, until they can no longer deny their attraction to one another. With a bit of a deadline on Siobhan’s book, Emily is stuck between a rock and a hard place - does she prioritize the book despite her fast growing feelings for Kieran? And will doing so risk everything they have?

Again, I really enjoyed reading this book! I just think that the writing wasn’t as polished compared to other similar books I’ve read recently. It felt immature? I’m not sure that’s the best word, but extensive use of exclamation marks and driving a nickname into the ground just feels like the writing is underdeveloped.

I also was bummed that they didn’t really explore much of Ireland in this book. Most of the plot was confined to the bookstore so it felt like the plot could have taken place anywhere.

All that said, this was also a really lovely story of a woman finding a positive maternal figure (her mom SUCKS), and it was so nice seeing Emily heal a bit in that way.

3.75 stars from me but I would recommend it if you’re looking for a quick and cute Irish read!
