Self-Care for Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: Honor Your Emotions, Nurture Your Self, and Live with Confidence by Lindsay C. Gibson

3.0

"Family is the raw stone out of which we were sculpted. Michelangelo said- the secret to sculpting his masterpiece David was to simply remove everything that wasn't David. The beauty of David was inside the stone all along but had to brought out by the strike of Michelangelo's chisel"

This book is very motivating to do as the title suggests- taking care of yourself like the adult you needed as a kid. It has various sections focusing on our relationship with ourselves and that with others. I loved the metaphors more than the actual advices because they do seem very inconsistent based on empirical evidence. I also liked practical advice about talking to various types of communicators because this is something I'm struggling with at the moment. If you're someone who feels guilty in taking care of yourself then this book is a good starting point. However, I'm a little ahead on the journey I guess so I need more practical advice than words of affirmation. As in trying to learn how can I overcome the self-sabotaging actions from inhibiting believe systems that are contributed from parentification and other family dynamics? So I identify with my inner David(fairly), I'm looking for the chisel and steps on becoming Michaelangelo!
