La Nuit des temps by René Barjavel

3.0

A very unequal read. The prose is fine, the basic idea also, but it's quite dated. The themes of nuclear destruction, student revolts and sexual liberation are very 1960's. Also, the author is misogynist and borderline racist at times, so it doesn't help. I have to remind myself that it was published in 1968 and that Barjavel wasn't a young man back then.

Nevertheless, it is an important part of French science fiction. The main "discovery" and Elsa's flashbacks are the most interesting plot points. The characters are often shallow and very caricatural, so the plot makes the book interesting more than them.
