The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemingway
As the first book I’ve read by Ernest Hemingway I definitely enjoyed it. Since becoming vegan my thoughts on fishing have definitely changed, so I wasn’t the most excited when I was reading and learned it’s about an old man on maybe the craziest fishing trip ever. Knowing nothing about Hemingway I was interested to see if he was someone like John Williams who I felt a “connectedness” to, or some sort of personal/emotional pull towards, but the back of the book said his three favorite things to do were bull riding, fishing and hunting haha.
The book is spectacularly written of course. His short sentences were really enjoyable to read when it described the minutia of what he was doing on the boat, it was almost meditative. The book took a while to really get me invested though, with the minutia of his work wearing me down before I started caring about the story and got sucked into the details. My favorite parts were the moments of contemplation had by the old man. The seemingly random moments of self reflecting about who is, the nature of fishing and his mindset to overcome the brutal task at hand were always really great to read. I can see how this book and most likely his other works would deeply impact people.
Overall it was a really great book that took a bit to get into but was a quick and interesting ride. I have another Hemingway book that I’ll be reading in the future so I’m looking forward to that. Hopefully there’s less needless animal death in the next one but just as much contemplation haha.
“Let him think I am more man than I am and I will be so.”
