The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry has so much style it hardly knows how to contain itself. The writing is tight and witty, at times making it feel as though the banter is between the reader and the book and not contained to the characters. The story is compelling, too, weaving worldbuilding in naturally and incrementally so as to not drag the story down in exposition. Clever quips and cleverer story craft surround Delly; Winn, the part-troll woman Delly’s hoping to woo; Abstensia, the stiff academy-trained wizard; and a whole “merry band of female catastrophes.” The cadence, tempo, and Delly’s sense of self-expression made me love this book. And I haven’t even mentioned the skeletal, back-from-the-dead mouse Buttons that goes “Bong” to the shuddering horror of those within earshot.
