The Invention of Morel
by Adolfo Bioy Casares
I've had a minute now to sit with this little novella. I initially picked it up 1) because it is an NYRB and I am obsessed with what they do and 2) because Borges lauded it. And I can definitely see why. While it veers towards a more futuristic and mechanical form of science fiction- it also retains a lot of the themes and devices that I love in magical realism. Most notably in it's theme of isolation, it's narrators odd relationship with his ego, and a skewed sense of reality that is even more emphasized by strangeness that is taken with a grain of salt. I wasn't absolutely thrilled near the middle and the end of the story, but I found the whole thing pretty interesting and thought-provoking! I want to explore the genre even more. This was definitely gem that I think that I will have to return to it eventually...
